THUMPING WIN FOR NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand began their world cup campaign with a thumping win against England in the
first match of ICC Men’s cricket world cup at Narendra Modi cricket stadium in Ahmedabad.
Chasing 283 runs, New Zealand raced to the target in just 36.2 overs.
After Will Young departed early in Sam Curran’s over, Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra
demolished England’s bowling with aggressive display of batting. Both left handers made an
impressive 273 run partnership making a record of the highest partnership while chasing in
world cup history. It is also the highest unbeaten partnership in a world cup ever.

Devon Conway got his fifth century in only 83 balls and went on to score 152 runs in just 121
balls with 19 fours and three sixes. At the other end, Rachin Ravindra smashed his maiden
century in his first world cup and remained unbeaten at 123 runs in 96 balls. Rachin became
the youngest New Zealand player to score a century in world cup at the age of 23 years and
321 days.
Earlier in the day, New Zealand won the toss and asked England to bat. Joe Root was top
scorer making 77 runs after Jonny Bairstow departed making swift 33 runs. Captain Jos
Buttler added 43 runs to the scoreboard and was looking dangerous but New Zealand did
well to restrict England to 282 runs by picking 9 wickets. Matt Henry took 3 wickets while Glenn
Phillips shocked England by taking the prized wicket of Joe Root.
Rachin Ravindra was adjudged man of the match for his blistering batting display. New
Zealand next face Netherlands on October 9, 2023.
